چکیده

The importance of land surface-atmosphere interactions, principally the effects of soil moisture, on hydrological, meteorological, and ecological processes has gained widespread recognition over recent decades. Its high spatial and temporal variability however, makes soil moisture a difficult parameter to measure and monitor effectively using traditional methods. Microwave remote sensing technology has demonstrated the potential to map and monitor relative soil moisture changes over large areas at regular intervals in time and also the opportunity of measuring, through inverse modelling, absolute soil moisture values. This ability has been demonstrated under a variety of topographic and land cover conditions using both active and passive microwave instruments. The purpose of this paper is to review the current status of soil moisture determination from active microwave remote sensing systems and to highlight the key areas of research that will have to be addressed to achieve routine use of the proposed retrieval

The added value of spaceborne passive microwave soil moisture retrievals for forecasting rainfall-runoff partitioning

[1] Using existing data sets of spaceborne soil moisture retrievals, streamflow and precipitation for 26 basins in the United States Southern Great Plains, a 5-year analysis is performed to quantify the value of soil moisture retrievals derived from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) X-band (10.7 GHz) radiometer for forecasting storm event-scale runoff ratios....

The impact of land surface temperature on soil moisture anomaly detection from passive microwave observations

For several years passive microwave observations have been used to retrieve soil moisture from the Earth’s surface. Low frequency observations have the most sensitivity to soil moisture, therefore the current Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and future Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) satellite missions observe the Earth’s surface in the L-band frequency. In the past, several sate...

Assessment of Non-parametric Methods for Soil Moisture Retrieval from Active Microwave Data

Active microwave remote sensing observations hold the potential for efficient and reliable mapping of spatial soil moisture distributions. However, soil moisture retrievals from microwave remote sensing techniques are typically complex because of the inherent difficulty in characterizing the interactions among land surface parameters that contribute to the retrieval process. Therefore adequate ...

Soil moisture retrieval from optical and thermal spaceborne remote sensing.

Soil moisture is the water held in the soil within reach of plant roots and is one of the most important land environmental variables in perspective with land surface climatology, hydrology, and ecology. The soil moisture content (SMC) generally refers to the water contained in the upper 1-2 m of soil, which can potentially evaporate into the atmosphere. Variations in SMC have strong impacts on...

Intercomparison of Surface Roughness Parameterizations for Soil Moisture Retrieval

Soil moisture plays a key role in many hydrological and agricultural processes because it controls the water and heat energy exchange between the earth and the atmosphere. Addressing the need for routine global surface soil moisture maps, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission in 2009. It provides L-band microwave brightness temperature obse...
